5:15-6:15pm Docent tours of the Marion Davies Guest House
6:30-8pm Artist Demonstration
Textile artist Linda Bolhuis demonstrates Serti resist painting. Presented in association with Mountains to the Sea, an exhibit of work from the artist-owned Topanga Canyon Gallery in the Beach House Exhibit Gallery. Attendees may experiment with fabric painting and will take away a sample of silk (depending on availability).
The Serti (French for "enclose") technique of painting on silk allows me to capture the shifting qualities of light found within the intimacy of a water garden. I find myself involved with the flow and blending of color, using strong lines to define dramatic areas within these waterscapes. My attempt to capture the breathtaking moments found in the natural land and water scapes around me have become my conversation with the world. -Linda Bolhuis
Following the lead of the first Topanga Artists' Guild in the 1950's, Topanga Canyon Gallery brings together more than 40 well-known and emerging artists from the greater Los Angeles area, over half of whom are from Topanga Canyon. The gallery was originally founded in the 1980's and opened at its current location in Pine Tree Circle at 120 N. Topanga Canyon Blvd. in the fall of 2000. Every month the gallery hosts a new show and opening reception, featuring two to three of the gallery artists or a gallery-wide show. http://www.topangacanyongallery.com
Visit the Beach House Exhibit Gallery from August 26 through November 28, 2010 to experience Mountains to the Sea, an exhibit of work from the artist-owned Topanga Canyon Gallery. Eleven artists exhibit work that reflects the land we walk on and the vistas that embrace us as illustrated through land and seascapes, abstract paintings, photographs and ceramic sculpture. Two Artist Demonstrations will be presented as part of this exhibition; Linda Bolhuis's demonstration of Serti resist painting on silk on 9/27/10, and Rebecca Catterall's demonstration of image transfer to clay, date TBA.
